This will allow Mary to live again through Alice and damn them all to hell.įenn and Natalie turn up, with Fenn revealing that everything was a purposefully planned hoax. They proceed with the service, at which Alice convinces the parishioners to pledge themselves three times to Mary. He warns Fenn that trying to tell the truth won't convince anyone since he has a reputation as a liar. Turns out, Byles knew about Mary Elnor but is in denial about the connection to Alice's miracles. Her dying declaration was that she would live through her children - and, surprise surprise, Alice is her descendant. Meanwhile, Fenn discovers Mary Elnor was pregnant before she was killed and gave birth to a son. Inside at Hagan's funeral, Alice proclaims that everyone should come to the tree for a feast to celebrate the immaculate conception and pledge themselves to Mary.
Alice claims she's been cured by the Virgin Mary, then cures several more people of their seemingly incurable ailments - including her uncle's emphysema. When Alice wakes up, she speaks again and local doctor Natalie Gates (Katie Aselton) confirms she can truly hear by testing her. He reveals Alice is Deaf and mute, but Fenn is sure she spoke. There, he learns that the girl is named Alice (Cricket Brown) and Father William Hagan ( William Sadler) is her uncle and guardian. Fenn finds her at the same tree where she says some weird religious nonsense and faints, so Fenn brings her to the neighbouring church. Later, driving home drunk, he nearly hits a young woman in a nightgown, and she runs off into the woods. However, after some eerie whispers, Fenn finds a kern doll in the hollow of the aforementioned tree and gets the idea to smash it open and stage a story. It turns out to be the farmer's bored teenage son spray painting Metallica's logo on the cow's butt. In the present day, disgraced journalist Gerry Fenn ( Jeffrey Dean Morgan of The Walking Dead) is sent from Boston to the rural town of Banfield to report on the mutilation of a cow.
